Gundam RX-78-2 (Review)

Head

The head is nicely done, with some inner details included that consist mainly of showing of the head vulcans. The eye piece is done in clear plastic so that you can put a light in there if you are really up to the task. Then you have the red lower of the eyes that is a totally different piece so you don’t have to paint it. This is also the trademark red Gundam chin assembly. You get the face piece that’s detailed nicely so that you can put your panel lines in without any trouble. The main camera piece is also clear plastic and if painted it looks nice. Also, the rear camera is not cast in clear plastic so you’ll have to paint that. This is a fairly simple head to construct. The head movement isn’t restricted by the upper chest piece. My only complaint is that it cant really look down all that well. So you loose the effect of the suit looking down at its feet.

Torso

Inside the torso is where the wonderful Core Fighter goes. Without the Core Fighter the torso is a hollow bulk with an opening hatch. The hatch can open to show off the Core Fighter inside or if you want to display the Core Fighter it comes with the same Core Block that the GM has. It is a nicely detailed Core Block showing off hoses and things of that nature. The yellow vent come with a small webbed piece of plastic that goes behind it to make it look darker in the vents. The randsel or backpack has nice detail with adjustable nozzles. It has a polycap to hold the shield when not in use. It also comes with polycaps to hold the two beam sabers. Then there is the covering for the backpack that slides over it. The skirt armor is done nicely. You get the red back with the yellow V above the crotch area that looks sharp on it. The front skirt armor is done with double polycaps so that each will pivot on its own; it doesn’t effect poseability in any way that I have encountered. Each of the side skirt pieces have a slight notch in them to fit the beam rifle so that your Gundam can go walking around with his beam rifle on his hip, either hip. The back plate is fixed in position but as with the front it doesn’t effect the poses at all. The rear skirt armor also has a spot for Gundam to rack his hyper bazooka. It folds out in hold its snuggly.

Arms

These arms are somewhat overly simple. The shoulder cover is two pieces, and the seam is nicely hidden at the edge of the shoulder. Bandai was nice and went ahead and put on dry transfer decals with the U.N.T. Spacy on the right shoulder cover and a red Pegasus on the left shoulder. The upper arm half is two pieces put together with a polycap at each end. One goes into the shoulder, the other into another two pieces put together that goes to form the elbow joint with an additional poly cap. The lower arms have a detail panel inside of them that is hinged. It adds very little to the model personally, but it doesn’t take away from it. Then the hand is a really low grade hand for an MG, it's two pieces stuck together with the fingers and whatnot. They didn’t give these hands backs as they did with most of the other MG kits. Gripping, fist and flat hands are included.

Legs

The legs on this kit leave a lot to be desired. Number one on the list is poseability. The legs as a whole are very stiff. The upper leg is two pieces with a polycap. Then, the knee joint is a total joke. The knee allows almost no bending. It’s very hard to give the model a crouched look. The lower leg has no frame as with the upper. It has a slight piece of detail in the rear as it shows off some inner workings with a joint. These legs are not the greatest legs Bandai could have done. The feet for this kit aren’t as bad as the rest of the leg. They have molded pistons in the upper have of the foot. Then you have your small ankle cover that the Gundam models have. You have two small molder thrusters in the bottom of the foot. As stated, legs aren’t totally bad but they lack in many areas.

Weapons and Accessories

Beam rifle- The beam rifle is nicely done with the adjustable yellow eye sight and the lower aiming bar. It has a piece that comes out on it at the butt of the rifle that will fit into the side skirt armor of the Gundam so that he can carry it on his hip.
Hyper bazooka- The hyper bazooka is also nicely done. It’s done with a huge barrel to give it the appearance of being hollow. The bazooka is molded in two pieces all the way to the clip. With the little hook on the back it looks great, but is hard to pose with.
Shield- The shield is identical to the GM seeing as how the kits are almost identical. It has the adjustable hand slider bar and the clear viewing visor. It's nicely done but can sometime be heavy for the model's arms. Mine has been known to fall off from time to time.
Beam sabers- The beam sabers are molded in two pieces and fit nicely into the randsel. They hold well in the hands and aren’t prone to falling off.
Heavy user parts- These are detail parts that you can slap onto your Gundam to make it yours. Have fun with 'em.

Conclusion

This MG leaves a lot to be desired. Seeing how it’s the hero suit of the show I had expected more. It's not up to standards with what they are releasing now but its still not a bad model. If you can find it for cheap go for it. It has some neat gimmicks like the inner detail, but compared to some of the newer suits it’s very far behind. I’m anxious to pick up one of the One Year War versions and see how they compare. (Overall Rating: 3 out of 5 stars)
